Falling Asleep With Gadgets or the TV On Might Make Us Gain Weight

Falling asleep with your favorite TV show on might be something you do every day because it helps you relax. But as nice as this nighttime ritual sounds, it can actually have negative effects on your health. A study found that women who slept with artificial light on at night were more likely to become obese or overweight.

What the study found

Over 40,000 women, between the ages of 35 and 74 participated in the study. Researchers from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences in the US recorded their weight at the beginning of the study and monitored it for almost 6 years.

The women were asked whether they slept in a dark room, with a small nightlight, with a light on outside the room, or with light from the TV on. And while a small nightlight didn`t seem to have a huge effect on weight, other forms of light presented a bigger problem.

Women who slept with a TV or light on were 17% more likely to gain 5 kg or more, compared to those who didn’t sleep with a light on.

Women who said they slept with a light on were 22% more likely to become overweight and 33% more likely to become obese.

Why the women gained weight

Falling asleep with the TV on could cause you to gain weight because it delays your body’s clock. Sleeping with a light on at night affects your metabolism in a way that can increase your risk of obesity, high blood pressure, and high blood sugar.

Artificial light at night was linked to shorter sleep. As a result, you simply have more time to eat more food. Increased energy intake can also be caused by behavioral and cognitive changes, as well as the changes in appetite-regulating hormones.

And if you don’t get enough sleep regularly, it can lead to sleep deprivation. Feeling fatigued, in turn, causes you to be less physically active. So while you consume more calories, you burn less of them.

The blue light from your phones, computers, tablets, and e-readers has been shown to have negative effects on sleep quantity and quality. It can also cause you to feel sleepy during the daytime. This kind of light suppresses melatonin and disrupts your circadian rhythms.

The researchers also said that having artificial light at night is associated with socioeconomic disadvantages and unhealthy behaviors, like an unhealthy diet, a sedentary lifestyle, or stress.
